Featuring the revolutionary USB 3.1 Type-C™ connector for connectivity with the latest MacBook and Google Chromebook + a host of upcoming USB 3.1 devices!
So, it's finally here! The latest USB 3.1 Type-C™ standard has arrived to revolutionise the connectivity world! "But what exactly is this new version of USB" I hear you say... well let me explain...
USB 3.1 SuperSpeed Type-C: Simplified
With the USB 3.1 Type-C plug, we get a new plug design that is reversible, meaning it inserts in either orientation (no more fiddling for the USB socket in the dark, only to find you have the connector up the wrong way). But physical differences aside, USB 3.1 can now support data transfer speeds up to 10Gbps - that's twice that of USB 3.0, when connected to two compatible USB Type-C (Gen 1) devices. Furthermore, the power and charging ability of the cables has been greatly increased... and if that wasn't enough, USB 3.1 Type-C cables can now be used natively to carry AV signals. These AV singals are natively compatible with HDMI, DisplayPort and more when using the relevant USB 3.1 cables. Therefore, a single USB 3.1 Type-C cable can be used as a data transfer cable, power cord for your laptop, and a AV cable to your monitor all at the same time! Amazing!
One cable to rule them all
So USB 3.1 sounds amazing - and it is - but most of the new features (AV functions and increased power output, plus 10Gbps speeds) are only supported when using a USB 3.1 Type-C to Type-C Cable or a Type-C to AV (HDMI, DisplayPort etc) cable. So until the world is full of Type-C compatible devices, backwards compatibility to older USB 3.0 and 2.0 standards will be the main role of USB 3.1 cables...
...and that brings me to this handy cable: a USB 3.1 Type-C OTG Cable. Perfect for all those new MacBook and Chromebook owners out there looking to connect USB 3.0 or 2.0 flash drives or other devices directly to their shiney new Type-C port
